How to Treat Common Winter Injuries

There are numerous reasons why more injuries occur during the winter. Much of it is to do with the fact that weather conditions are much harsher and injuries come as a result of extreme weather like ice, snow and heavy rain.

Injuries can also occur whilst taking precautionary measures against winter weather. For example, you may injure yourself when scraping ice off the car or shovelling snow from the front garden.

Slips, trips and falls

When the floor is icy and slippery in winter, it is inevitable that people will have slips, trips and falls. Whether you are running, walking, cycling or simply getting off the bus, black ice can easily be missed when travelling and can result in accidents.

Depending on the level of injury, you may need to have first aid or be taken to A&E following a slip or fall on icy pavements.

If you fracture a bone, or have a head injury, for example, you’ll need to be taken to A&E, as well as other more serious injuries.

Cuts and bruises can be treated with regular first aid, you will probably need to apply antiseptic wipes, plasters and bandages, in some cases to ensures any wounds stay clean.

Strains and Sprains

Similarly to slips, trips and falls, strains and sprains will need to be treated according to their severity.

Strains resulting from shovelling snow, lifting heavy objects with muscles that are not warmed up and scraping ice from the car, can be treated at home with rest, ice and elevation, or more serious injuries may require medical attention.

Car Incidents

Whether you are using your car more often in the winter or are a victim of a car crash due to the harsher weather conditions, car incidents can cause both physical injuries and shock.

Basic first aid can help with minor injuries caused by car accidents, including bumps, bruises and cuts, however you may need to be taken to hospital to be treated for shock if you are involved in a particularly harsh accident.

If somebody is suffering from shock, for example, it is important to keep the casualty warm, remove them from the scene of the accident, comfort them and monitor their response.
